In a statement released on Friday, Hezbollah voiced solidarity with the “brothers and people in the beloved city of Tripoli in these tragic moments,” adding that the explosions meant to cause chaos in the country.
“Hezbollah expresses its deep sorrow for what happened to our people in Tripoli and condemns this new terrorist crime, in which [the party] sees a continuation of the project that aims to drag Lebanon into chaos and destruction, and accomplish the hateful objectives of the Zionist enemy and all those who stand behind it,” the resistance movement said.
Hezbollah also called on the Lebanese people “not get caught behind the rumors and accusations that want to cause destruction to the country and its nation.”
“The explosions aimed to prompt the Lebanese people to fight internally under religious and sectarian titles, which serves the hypocrite regional-international project that wants to divide our region and drown it in seas of blood and fire,” the statement read.
Lebanese Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Qabbani also slammed the explosion, saying, “This terror act today is a conspiracy that is targeting all Lebanese, and instigating Sunnis to attack Shias and Shias to attack Sunnis, and igniting the fire of strife between them.”
Lebanese officials said earlier in the day that the blasts hit two mosques in the city, 70 kilometers (40 miles) from the capital Beirut, at the Friday prayers.
According to reports, the first explosion took place outside al-Taqwa mosque. A few minutes later, a car laden with 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of explosives detonated outside al-Salam mosque, the Lebanese Interior Ministry said.
"We were just bowing down to pray for the second time and the bomb went off. The air cleared, and I looked around me and saw bodies," a witness said.
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the bombings, expressing hope that “those responsible for such cowardly acts of violence will be brought to justice as soon as possible.”
The European Union and the UN Security Council also censured the attacks.
