Security forces said one or more individuals attacked the mosque early morning on Monday, August 26, and threw Molotov cocktail at the place of worship, dhnet website reported.
The city’s Muslims Association in a statement condemned the incident. It said the attackers intended to throw incendiary materials into the mosque through the window but failed.
A Molotov cocktail hit the door of the mosque and set it on fire, according to the statement, but the neighbors managed to put out the fire. They then informed the police.
Belgian police have started their investigation into the incident to identify and arrest those behind the attack.
Head of the city’s Muslims Association said the Muslim community of the city will not file a complaint.
“Muslims in this city have always lived in peace with followers of other faiths. Anyone who has committed this hideous act has certainly done it out of ignorance about Islam and the teachings of the Quran,” he said.
