Secretary General of Al-Wifaq national-Islamic movement criticized the Arab League’s decision to select Bahrain as the permanent host of the Arab Human rights court.
Sheikh Ali Salman underlined that the decision would put the human rights court in the cemetery of human rights (Bahrain).
He said the Arab League has been suffering from clinical death for decades and has created dead bodies, the last one of which is the Arab human rights court.
Salman pointed to the dark record of the Bahraini regime in terms of human rights, saying that the UN Human Rights Council cited 167 human rights violations by the regime and called for improvement of the situation.
He noted that human rights organizations have described the situation in Bahrain as one of political oppression and injustice.
Meanwhile the Reporters Without Borders Organization has urged the Arab League to oblige the Bahraini regime to release prisoners of conscience in echange for selecting it as the host of Arab Human Rights Court.
The Al-e Khalifa regime’s opponents have described the league’s decision as ridiculous given the long list of human rights violations in the country.
Sayyed Jamil Kadhim, a spokesman for Bahrain’s opposition expressed condolences to Arab nations for selection of Bahrain as the court’s host country. He said no Arab country is qualified to host such a court.
Bahrain has been the scene of demonstrations since mid-February 2011. Thousands of pro-democracy protesters have staged numerous demonstrations in the streets of Bahrain, calling for the Al Khalifa family to relinquish power.
Following the eruption of the protests, the Bahraini regime promptly launched a brutal crackdown on the peaceful protests and called in Saudi-led Arab forces from neighboring states to assist the suppression.
Dozens of Bahraini people have been killed in the crackdown, and the security forces have arrested hundreds, including doctors and nurses.
