Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader described Western powers’ accusing the Syrian government of using chemical weapons as absurd.
In his second Friday prayers sermon at the University of Tehran Campus on September 6, Ayatollah Sayyed Ahmad Khatami said the Syrian government whose army has been making inroads against the rebels had no need to use chemical weapons.
He said Syria is now an exhibition of the debacle of Western liberal democracy. “Syria has been burning in the fire of foreign intervention for 30 months, a fire ignited by the Zionist regime and countries like the US, Britain, France, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey.”
Ayatollah Khatami said that after attempting and failing to topple Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in the past 30 months, they are not seeking to change the equations through military attack, but their attempts will backfire.
Elsewhere in his sermon, Ayatollah Khatami pointed to the recent meeting of the Assembly of Experts, saying that the assembly is a source of reliance for the Islamic Establishment.
He referred to the meeting of the assembly members with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei and said the Supreme Leader in that meeting highlighted several issues including the Islamic Awakening.
The 14th meeting of the Assembly of Experts was held in Tehran on Tuesday, Wednesday, September 3-4.
