Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader described the Sacred Defense as a blessing for the Iranian nation.
Delivering his second sermon at the University of Tehran Campus on Friday, September 20, Aytaollah Ahmad Jannati said the Sacred Defense (against Iraqi invasion that started in 1980 and lasted for 8 years) had blessings for the nations although the war brought about losses of life and material damage to the country.
He said no one could believe that the newly-established Islamic Republic with a weakened military would be able to withstand the Iraqi army.
“[But] Imam Khomeini (RA) on the one hand strengthened the army and elevated its morale and on the other hand mobilized people because no power can withstand the power of people.”
Ayatollah Jannati said the Iranian people stood up against Iraqi aggressors with bare hands and little equipment and that what they had was the power of faith.
He underlined that with the spirit of martyrdom and faith, the Iranians forced out the enemy and did not allow one inch of the Iranian territory to remain in occupation.
The Friday prayers leader of Tehran further referred to the establishment of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and said this revolutionary institution was founded based on Taqwa (God-fearing), faith, and obeying the Vali Amr (Supreme Leader).
He urged IRGC members to maintain this spirit (of Taqwa, faith, and obeying the Vali Amr) and remain the army of God.
Elsewhere in his second sermon, Ayatollah Jannati pointed to the situation in Syria and Iraq, saying that there are some in the two countries who just seek to kill everyone on their path without any specific goals.
He pointed to the US threats of military intervention in Syria, saying that an attack on Syria would cost Washington dearly because both the people of Syria and the people of the world are against a strike.
Ayatollah Jannati urged that the Syrian crisis should only be resolved politically and through negotiations.
