Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Khamenei has pardoned eighty prisoners, including some arrested over riots which followed Iran's presidential election in 2009.
Prosecutor General and Judiciary Spokesman Gholam Hossein Mohseni Eje’i said on Monday that the prisoners were released after they were granted the clemency.
Eje’i added that under Iran’s Constitution, prisoners can be granted pardon on the suggestion of the Judiciary chief, and the pardon may cover all or part of their terms.
The Iranian official said more prisoners will be pardoned and released in the near future.
