Media outlets report that council members approved the project on Tuesday.
Crescent Community Center plans to build a 12,300-square-foot facility in a rural area southwest of the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
The group’s attorney, Eddie Bourdon, says construction isn’t expected to begin before spring.
The project is opposed by some residents who say they’re concerned about traffic and safety at an intersection that they say is prone to accidents.
According to Daily Press, A leader of a Hampton mosque rejected a claim by a Virginia Beach city councilman that his group has ties to the international Muslim Brotherhood organization.
“Our mosque is not tied to the Muslim Brotherhood or any group outside this country,” said Ahmed Noor, a trustee at the Mosque and Islamic Center of Hampton Roads located on Tide Mill Lane. “We have been in the area for many years, and it has been our goal since starting the mosque not to have any ties with any group outside this country.”
Councilman Bill DeSteph alleged the connection on Wednesday, the day after the Virginia Beach City Council voted to approve the city’s first mosque, which will be built at Salem and Landstown roads by Crescent Community Center. DeSteph — who is also the Republican candidate for the 82nd District seat in the House of Delegates — was the lone vote against allowing the mosque, claiming it was a threat to national security.
But at last the Virginia Beach council approved the group’s plan to build the 1st mosque in the city.
