Yale Prof Lectures on “God in the Quran” Today
Gerhard Böwering, professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at Yale University, lectures on “God in the Quran” at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the Presidential Suites of Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University.
This lecture, presented by the YSU Center for Islamic Studies, is free and open to the public.
Böwering has been at Yale since 1984. He previously taught at the University of Pennsylvania and has been a visiting professor at the University of Innsbruck, Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He has published The Mystical Vision of Existence in Classical Islam, The Minor Quran Commentary of al-Sulami, Sufi Treatises, Sufi Inquiries and Interpretations and The Comfort of the Mystics. He also has published numerous articles, including those in the Encyclopaedia of Islam, Encyclopedia of the Quran, and Encyclopaedia Iranica. He is the editor-in-chief of The Princeton Encyclopedia of Islamic Political Thought. Work in progress includes the following books: Islam and Christianity: the Inner Dynamics of Two Cultures of Belief, and The Dreams and Labors of a Central Asian Muslim Mystic. He was the recipient of a Mellon fellowship (1992), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2005-2006), and a fellowship from the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (2006). In 2004-2005 he gave the Erasmus Lectures at Notre Dame. He has been a member of the American Philosophical Society since 1994.
