The HBO documentary film "Quran by Heart" will be screened on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 4:30 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium.
The film goes behind the scenes of the International Holy Quran Competition, a prestigious Quran-recitation contest for children from around the world, and focuses on the inspiring lives of three of the children who participate in this unusual event.
Along the way, religious themes of moderation, tolerance and fundamentalism are explored.
Anna Oldfield, assistant professor of English, will moderate a panel discussion following the film. Oldfield has spent more than six years researching and teaching in the Middle East, including Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkey. She earned a Ph.D. in languages and cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
This is the third event in a five-part series titled "Muslim Journeys: Pathways to Faith." Books and videos can be found in Kimbel Library on the Bridging Cultures Bookshelf: Muslim Journeys. A limited number of each individual title will be given to registered participants. After each event, participants can exchange the media for the next title in the series.
The "Muslim Journeys" series is presented by CCU's Kimbel Library, the Bryan Information Commons, CCU's Department of Philosophy and Religion and the Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values. The series is in conjunction with "Bridging Cultures," a grant program of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), to familiarize audiences with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the United States and around the world. Kimbel Library is one of 125 libraries and state humanities councils across the country selected to participate in the project.
