It is a tradition that takes place on the 9th day of Dul Hijjah every year, Al-Ahram daily reported.
The old Kiswa is cut into smaller pieces and gifted to prominent figures and personalities of the Muslim world.
The Kiswa is black and made with pure natural silk. Muhammad Bin Abdullah Yajuda, director of Makkah’s Kiswa Factory, said 22 million Saudi rials has been spent to make the Kiswa this year.
He added that 670 kilograms of pure silk has been imported from Italy and Switzerland to use in making the Kiswa.
The covering of Kaaba is 14 meters high and has sentences sewn with embroidered golden thread.
The changing of the Kiswa is done in a particular way with the new Kiswa hung over the old one from the top and then the old one removed from underneath.
