This is according to Iraqi Quranic figure Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Karkhi who told IQNA that the idea has been proposed to head of the country’s World Holy Quran Association.
He said the commission could ranks Quran activists based on their expertise and knowledge and take the responsibility of selecting Quran experts to serve in jury panels of international Quran competitions.
“The commission could also hold forums every one or two years and organize courses on Tajweed, Lahn, and Sowt to improve their skills.”
He said a jury member of Quran contests should be well-acquainted with Tajweed and Lahn principles to be able to assess the performance of the contestants.
“The jury members should also be qualified experts in their own field and know all the details and nuances.”
Al-Karkhi pointed to the important role of international Quran competitions in developing Quranic teachings as well as in Quranic education, saying that Quranic figures from different parts of the world come to these Quranic events, which can be an opportunity for learning about one another’s experiences.
He noted that most contestants are also representatives of Quranic institutes and organizations and their interactions could be regarded as interactions between the Muslim world Quranic institutes.
The Iraqi Quran expert further referred to the problems in international Quran contests, saying that the problems are either in organization, or in the jury panel or the level of participants, all of which can be prevented.
He called for similar regulations for all international Quran competitions in the Muslim world, saying that it would help both the participants and the jury members.
Ask about participation of women in international Quran contests, Al-Karkhi said it is necessary that women take part in Quranic activities.
Women raise the next generation in the society and their acquaintance with the Quran is very constructive, he said.
“Women who learn the Quran by heart can much better help their children to memorize the Holy Book as well,” he stated.
Al-Karkhi concluded by stressing the importance of including categories such as Qurna interpretation in the international Quran competitions.
