The blast, which happened in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, left two people dead, lesechos website reported.
It took place in the vicinity of a mosque in Dugulubgei village at about 3 o’clock in the morning, the report said.
Russia’s security forces said a number of weapons including a Kalashnikov AK-47 were found near the dead bodies.
They said the two are likely to have been the bombers who failed to escape the scene before the blast took place.
Anti-imigration and anti- Muslim sentiments have been on the rise in Russia in recent years.
There are some 23 million Muslims in the Russian Federation, mostly living in the north of the Caucasus, representing roughly 15 percent of its 145 million peoples. Islam is the country’s second-largest religion, behind Orthodox Christianity.
