Egypt Bans Activity of Women Quran Memorizers Lacking Al-Azhar Certificate
Egypt has banned the activity of women Quran memorizers who are not graduates of Al-Azhar Islamic center.
Director of Cairo’s Awqaf Department Sheikh Muhammad Abdul Zahir has issued a verdict which forbids women Quran memorizers and preachers who have no certificates from Al-Azhar or Awqaf Ministry from preaching in Egypt.
The official said the decision has been made based on the policies and strategies of Awqaf Minister Muhammad Mukhtar Guma to promote moderate Islam that is emphasized by Al-Azhar.
He added that recently women Quran memorizers and preachers have distorted the teachings of Islam in their preaching.
The ministry had previously banned the activity of men preachers and memorizers without official certificates.
