Teachers Needed for Islamic Courses in Germany

The German state of Hesse is in desperate need of teachers of Islamic religion.
Hence the initiative of local authorities (who first introduced Islam in elementary school lessons) to establish new courses to train this special category of teachers.
Applications have been open for a few days and the courses will start on February 1, 2014 at the Justus-Liebig-Universität. It is an acredited master, with a duration of 12 months, to ensure that those attending the so-called “Lehramt”, gain a teaching qualification.
Introduced last year, the Islamic religion classes were a great success. So much so that the Hesse scheme operates in rotation with North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous region with the largest number of Muslims, which has started Islam lessons in its primary schools.
The problem is the lack of qualified personnel. In Hesse, for the first 29 classes where these lessons were held, there were only 19 teachers. This is especially a concern given the fact that in the next four years, the regional government wants to ensure lessons of Islamic religion in all classes of all schools in the state.
