The teachings of Qadir have great capacity for upholding unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims.
This is according to religious scholar and researcher Seyyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini, who told IQNA that this great potential can also be used to confront deviated ideologies like those of Takfiri and Wahabi currents.
He said one of the objectives of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on the day of Qadir was to set Muslims free from discord and division and lead them toward unity and solidarity.
“That is why he was ordered by God to select Imam Ali (AS) as his successor,” Hosseini, who is a member of the Khorshid (sun) Center said.
The Khorshid center is active in promotion of the teachings of Qadir and Sahifeh Sajjadiyeh through the media.
Hosseini said all Muslims respect Imam Ali (AS) and his great character and the event of Qadir (in which Imam Ali (AS) was introduced as the leader of the Islamic Ummah after the Holy Prophet (PBUH) can be the source of unity among Shia and Sunni Muslims.
He said the Eid Al-Qadir is the feat of peace and that the teachings of Qadir are great teachings that can promote peace and unity in the Muslim world.
Hosseini further referred to the activities of the Khorshid Center at the international level and said it has set up a website to promote the teachings of Qadir internationally.
The event of Qadir took place in the tenth year after Hijra. After completing his last pilgrimage (Hajjatul-Wada'), the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was leaving Makkah toward Madinah, where he and the crowd of people reached a place called Qadir Khumm. It was a place where people from different provinces used to greet each other before taking different routes for their homes.
In this place, the following verse of the Quran was revealed: “O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you don’t do it, you have not delivered His message (at all); and Allah will protect you from the people ...”(Quran 5:67).
Upon receiving the verse, the Prophet (PBUH) stopped on that place (the pond of Khumm). Then he sent for all people who have been ahead in the way, to come back and waited until all pilgrims who fell behind, arrived and gathered. He then delivered a speech in which he announced Imam Ali (AS) as his successor. The date of this event was the 18th of Dhul-Hijjah.
