A woman convict who was jailed for drug offence in 2009 had turned over a new leaf and emerged top in a Quranic recital competition among prison inmates held at the Bentong Prison in Pahang, Malaysia, recently.
Balqis (not her real name), who represented the Tapah Prison, defeated 30 other women inmates to emerge as the winner for the second time.
The 27-year-old inmate, from Taiping, won the competition for the first time in 2010 and emerged as the first runner-up last year.
When met by reporters during the "Jalinan Kasih Aidiladha" programme at the Tapah Prison, Balqis said she attended Quranic classes at least two-hours daily at the prison since four years ago.
"Being held in this prison has provided me an invaluable opportunity to learn the Quran in greater depth.
Balqis said she hoped to teach Quranic classes to children.
