Speaking in a meeting with Arab League-UN Special Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi, Hojat-ol-Islam Rouhani said resolving the crisis in Syria must be pursued politically as it is the best path toward promptly ending the violence in the country.
He underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran would spare no efforts to see the end of clashes and restoration of peace in Syria.
The president noted that there is general consensus that the future of Syria should be determined based on its people’s choice in a free election.
He added that Iran is committed to playing a positive role in different areas toward ensuring stability in Syria.
He wished success for Lakhdar Brahimi and the UN Secretary General in their efforts to uphold peace and democracy in Syria and voiced the Islamic Republic of Iran’s support for these efforts.
Brahimi, for his part, pointed to his visits to different countries prior to the Geneva II talks on Syria, and said the talks are aimed at setting the stage for clashing sides in Syria to hold dialogue and put an end to the current violence in Syria.
Brahimi also underlined that he strongly supports Iran’s participation in the Geneva II talks and hoped Iran’s contribution to peace in Syria will continue.
