Eric Has Designs on a Second Book Success
Islamic design expert Eric Broug, who has hosted workshops on the subject in Hebden Bridge, has published a new book.
Eric has followed up his first successful book on Islamic artwork with a publication containing more than 800 illustrations.
His latest book, ‘Islamic Geometric Design’, includes his own illustrations which accompany photographs of mosques, madrasas, palaces and tombs from the Islamic world from North Africa to Iran and Uzbekistan and ranging from the eighth to the 19th centuries.
Eric, who originates from Holland and now lives in Halifax, has been fascinated by the geometric patterns that occur in Islamic art and architecture since he was a student in Amsterdam 20 years ago.
He said: “It is the first full-color art book to be published on the subject. I analyze and explain these geometric designs for the first time in their historical and physical context.
“The book is aimed at a general audience but I really wanted it to have an educational component.”
Eric has hosted workshops in Islamic geometric design at Northlight Studios, Hebden Bridge, and is due to arrange his next one in April.
His work for an academic publisher in Bingley regularly takes him to the Middle East, where he spends his spare time writing - he has two more proposals in the pipeline.
His first book, ‘Islamic Geometric Patterns’, was also published by Thames & Hudson and has sold more than 25,000 copies, having been transplated into four languages - English, Persian, Turkish and Dutch.
