Its chairman, Dr Annuar Rapa'ee, said LAKIS had set up a committee to draft the proposal.
He had sought information and advice from the facilities in Kuching to help in the establishment of the academy and madrasah here, he said at the Sibu Division Quran Recital and Nasyid Competition last night.
"Muslims here and in the nearby areas do not have to travel out of town once the Quran academy is set up in Sibu," he said.
Dr Annuar, who is the state assemblyman for Nangka, said Sibu had about 200 'ustaz' and 'ustazah' (religious teachers) to help the Muslim community have a better understanding of the religion.
"As such, I urge the mosque and surau committees in the district to step up Islamic educational activities," he said.
In the Quran recital competition, Abdul Khalik Hasbullah and Masjuwita Mohamad Rejeni retained their titles in the 'qari' and 'qariah' categories, respectively. Twelve people took part in the competition.
The Putera Al-Haq and Putera Balkis groups were declared the winners in the traditional and modern categories, respectively, of the Nasyid competition out of the six participating groups.
