Kuala Lumpur to Host Malaysia's Nat'l Quran Reciters Assembly

TEHRAN (IQNA) - Kuala Lumpur will for the first time, host Malaysia's 58th National-Level Quran Reciters Assembly, to be held at Dewan Muktamar, Pusat Islam from April 20 to 25.

Malaysia Islamic Development Department (Jakim) director-general, Datuk Othman Mustapha said 14 qari (male reciters) and 14 qariah (female reciters) would participate in this competition.

"This is an annual program organized by the government to inculcate the culture of Quran reading among Muslims and understanding the essence of Quranic teachings," he told a news conference.

He said in this year's event, the participants would be tested on their Quran recital based on two melodies set by the judges and another two melodies spontaneously, compared to the participants' own choice previously, so as to enhance the quality of Quran reciting.

Othman said the champion qari and champion qariah would each receive RM30,000 in cash, a Proton Preve car, challenge trophy, take-away trophy and Haj package.

The runners-up will each receive RM20,000 in cash and the third placed, RM15,000 each.

The champions will represent Malaysia at the International Quran Reciters Assembly to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre from June 9 to 14.

Meanwhile, Othman said the Karnival Semarak Syariah (Sharia Lively Carnival) involving educational programs, 80 exhibition and sales booths, community programs and nasyid (religious songs) performances would be held in conjunction with the national-level event this time.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to officiate at the event themed, 'Unity the Pulse of National Transformation' on April 20 and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to close the event and present the prizes to the participants on April 25.
