South Shields Mosque Throws its Doors Open to Community
The Al Azhar Mosque in Laygate, South Shields, has recently been remodelled and is inviting people inside for a look about.
On Tuesday, from 6pm, members are hosting an open event to give people the chance to gain a better understanding of Islam.
The free event will include food, refreshments and informative literature, plus quests will be able to take part in a guided tour of the mosque.
A spokesman for the Al Azhar Mosque, where boxer Mohammad Ali has his marriage blessed in 1977, said: “Muslims in South Tyneside have been here for over a century and enjoy an excellent relationship with the broader community, yet many people don’t really know much about the role of the mosque in their daily lives.”
He added: “This event is designed to rectify that, and we extend the warmest of welcomes to those who wish to know more.”
