TEHRAN (IQNA) – Head of Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization (ICRO) said interfaith dialogues used to be mostly ceremonial at first but they have now become an academic issue.

Abuzar Ebrahimi Torkaman made the remark in a meeting in Bern with Archbishop Thomas Gullickson, Apostolic Nuncio to Switzerland, stressing that interfaith dialogue plays an important role in promoting mutual understanding among followers of different religions.

He noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran has over 30 years experience of holding religious dialogue, adding that Iran and the Vatican have so far held 9 rounds of interfaith dialogue and that the tenth round is slated for next year.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the ICRO chief underlined that religion does not allow violent interpretations of itself but it is human beings that sometimes come up with violent interpretations.

Ebrahimi Torkaman was in Bern to attend the 4th round of inter-religious dialogue between Iran and Switzerland.

Archbishop Gullickson, for his part, said Vatican attaches importance to interfaith dialogue with Iran.
