Shaikh Saqr bin Khalid bin Humaid Al Qasimi, Chairman of the RAK Holy Quran Establishment, said the move is aimed to encourage the memorization and recitation of the Holy Quran, KTimes reported.
"Three new categories have been added to the 16th edition of the formerly six-category award: 'Converts contest', 'Quran Virtues Hadiths', and 'Quran contest for imams and muezzins'," he said.
Registration for participating in the award was opened in late October. Ahmed Al Shehi, Director-General of the RAK Holy Quran Establishment, said applications would be accepted only from 20 Quran study centers and 45 mosques in RAK. "November 20 has been set as the deadline for application in the now nine-category award." The award is held annually under the patronage of Shaikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
Al Shehi said the initial qualifying tests would be held in December and the competitors will sit for their final examinations in January 2016.
"Participation in the award is open to only RAK-based Emiratis and residents. Contestants need to memorize three parts of the Holy Quran to be eligible for participation," said Al Shehi.
