TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Quran School in Beni, a city in north eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, is an educational center aiming to raise a generation aware of the need for peaceful coexistence.

According to al-Bashir website, the school is in the city’s grand mosque and admits some 260 students aged 5 to 17 every year.

Established 15 years ago, the school is a beacon of promoting peace and coexistence in a region that has been witnessing violence and armed clashes for years.

Students going to Beni’s Quran school learn the Quran as well as Islamic teachings and the Seerah of the Holy prophet (PBUH).

Abubakr Swaidak, one of the teachers, says the Quran school plays a major role in raising a generation who rejects violence and recognizes the need for peaceful coexistence.

He says when the students are taught the sublime teachings of Islam they will have enough awareness to stay away from violence.

Beni has a population of around 2 million, 400,000 of whom practice Islam.

Some 10 percent of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s 70 million people are Muslim.
