TEHRAN (IQNA) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad slammed certain countries’ support for terrorism and their moves aimed at hampering the political process for resolving the crisis in Syria.

Speaking Tuesday in a meeting in Damascus with Iran’s Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Assad also underlined the strategic relations between Tehran and Damascus in all areas, especially in the fight against terrorism "which threatens the entire region and beyond”.

He further appreciated Iran’s stances in support of Syria and said the friendly countries, Iran and Russia in particular, have played a major role in enhancing Syrians’ resistance against Takfiri terrorism in the past five years.

Rahmani Fazli, for his part, stressed Iran’s resolve to stand by Syria in its confrontation with Takfiri terrorists.

In the past five years, Syria has been gripped by civil war with Takfiri terrorists from various groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to the United Nations, more than 250,000 people have been killed and one million wounded during the conflict.

In the meantime, Iran has remained a close ally of the Syrian people and government in the face of the foreign-backed extremist and terrorist groups.
