Quran Competition Held in South American Country

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A competition on memorization and recitation of the Holy Quran was recently organized in Guyana’s capital city of Georgetown.

38 men took part in the contest, held in the categories of memorization of 10, 5, and 2 Juzes (parts) of the Quran, memorization of the last Juz and recitation of the first 10 Juzes, hqmi.org website reported.

The Islamic Society of Guyana organized the competition in cooperation with the World Association of Quran Memorization.

Four Quran masters made up the board of judges and a number of religious figures including Faysal Firuz, head of the Islamic Society of Guyana, as well as representatives of the South American country’s Islamic institutes were present at the Quranic event.

Guyana is a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast. English is the formal language of the country, which is culturally connected to the Caribbean region.

Guyana, which used to be a British colony for 200 years, achieved its independence in 1966.

Less than ten percent of Guyana's population is Muslim, representing some 60,000 individuals.
