TEHRAN (IQNA) - A group of college students are getting together to bring awareness to others about their culture.

The Muslim student association at East Stroudsburg University in East Stroudburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania, United States. is hosting a series of events for Islamic awareness week.

Binetou Fall, president of Muslim Student Association, says, "Islam is very misunderstood in America."

And that's why Fall wanted to create an Islam awareness week at East Stroudsburg University.

Radhia Adam / Senior, East Stroudsburg University says, "We hear things about Isis (Daesh or ISIL) and we connect it automatically with Islam, but those things are two completely different things."

Amadou Kane / Senior, East Stroudsburg University says,"Islam is all around the world not just in the middle east."

The group hopes by having a big campaign like these students can celebrate Islamic culture and remove any misconceptions or stereotypes surrounding the religion.

Binetou Fall says, "We can not do all that in one week, but we're just trying our best as a community here at Stroudsburg University."

Zara Khawahaa, an East Stroudsburg University senior, says, "We’ve done Islamic events in the past, they were kind of on the smaller side, so that's why we want to do a whole week ."

Events for the week include learning about modern issues facing Muslims in America and a discussion on the Islam religion. They hope the events will provide a small glimpse into their culture and serve as an eye opener for many.

The week kicks off tonight at East Stroudsburg University and ends on Friday.
