TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Lebanese Quran expert hailed the Islamic Republic of Iran’s international Quran competition as an opportunity to disprove baseless allegations that Shias neglect the Quran.

Speaking to IQNA, Hussein Hamdan, who has served as a member of panel of judges in several international Quran contest, noted that Iran’s international Quranic event brings together Sunni and Shia Qaris, memorizers and Quran experts from different countries and can be a venue for showing the importance Shias attach to the Quran and Quranic activities. 

He described Iran as the flag-bearer of Quranic programs and activities in the Muslim world, noting that a large number of Quran reciters and memorizers have been trained in Iran since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He also noted that many books and papers in the field of Quranic studies are written in the country every year.

As for the international Quran competition of the Islamic Republic, Hamdan said it has turned into one of the main international Quranic events in the world due to the participation of prominent Quran activists and experts.

He also praised the regulations of the competition as one of the most precise and thorough in the Muslim world.

Iran’s international Quran contest is annually organized by the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization with the participation of top Qaris and memorizers.

The event brings together participants from almost all Islamic countries, providing a unique opportunity for people from different races across the continents to assemble in a display of unity.

The 33rd edition of the competition, whose motto is "One Book, One Ummah”, will be held on May 11-17.

Last year, 67 Quran reciters and 62 memorizers from over 70 countries took part in the contest.
