TEHRAN (IQNA) – A regional Quran competition is underway in the Mauritanian capital of Nouakchott since Wednesday.

Mauritania Hosts Regional Quran Competition

The Islamic Affairs Ministry of Mauritania is holding the contest on memorization and Tajweed recitation of the Quran, saharamedias.net website reported.

Representatives of a number of African countries, including Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Gambia, and Mali are competing in the Quranic event.

The competition, named after Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, will run until Saturday.

It is aimed at promoting the teachings and culture of the Holy Quran and strengthening the youths’ relations with the Holy Book, according to Mauritanian authorities.

The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa.

The country’s population is estimated to be about 4 million and virtually all Mauritanians are Muslims.
