Some 60 Quran memorizers from 40 countries are present at the Quranic event.
Egypt's Awqaf Minister Muhammad Mukhtar Guma officiated the opening ceremony, saying in a speech that new aspects have been added to the competition in this edition.
He said the contestants will be scored, among other things, based on understanding the meaning of the Quran’s words and verses as well as interpretation of the verses.
He noted that the participants compete in four categories, including memorization of the entire Quran along with Tajweed recitation, according to Al-Ahram daily.
Guma went on to say that special seminars will be held on the sidelines of the competition with the participation of Quranic sciences scholars.
Winners of the competition are planned to be awarded in a ceremony in the holy month of Ramadan (June).
