University of New England to Host Lecture on English Translations of Quran
Now, less than 120 years later, there are more than 115 different English translations of the Islamic Holy Book, including the illustrated American Quran, which garnered widespread praise upon its publication in 2015.
A lecture by Bruce B. Lawrence at the University of New England’s Tangier Global Forum will explore the phenomenon that has resulted in today’s rich selection of English translations of the Quran. In tracing a movement led primarily by South Asian Muslim converts, Lawrence will discuss some of the challenges associated with transforming rhythmic Arabic into prosaic English while remaining faithful to the Quran’s sacred sounds and lofty meanings.
The lecture will take place on Thursday, March 29 at 7 p.m. local time (2 p.m. EST) in the auditorium at University of New England’s Tangier Campus. It will be live-streamed to students and faculty on UNE’s two campuses in Maine, USA, and to viewers around the world at www.une.edu/tgf/live.
Lawrence taught at Duke University for 40 years until he retired in 2011 as Marcus Family Humanities Professor of Religion. He is also Professor of Islamic Studies Emeritus, specializing in pre-modern Islam, South Asian Sufism, and Islamicate cosmopolitans. He is currently Adjunct Professor at the Alliance of Civilizations Institute in Istanbul. He received his Ph.D. in History of Religions at Yale University.
