Iran Says US Economic War Violates National Sovereignty of All States

IQNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the United States’ announcement of new economic sanctions against Iran, arguing that the measures amount to an attempt to impose US extraterritorial authority on sovereign states around the world.

In a post on X, Baghaei said the new sanctions go “far beyond” the continuation of what he described as an illegal US “economic war” against Iran.

“No government has the right to force foreign banks, businesses or airports, each operating under the exclusive jurisdiction of their own sovereign states to refrain from legitimate trade with a third country,” Baghaei wrote.

He argued that secondary sanctions have no basis in international law and violate the principle of sovereign equality enshrined in Article 2(1) of the United Nations Charter.

He also cited the International Court of Justice’s ruling in the Nicaragua case, saying such measures violate the customary prohibition on interference in the internal affairs of states.

According to Baghaei, economic coercion aimed at forcing a sovereign state to alter its legitimate policy choices constitutes an internationally wrongful act.

He further argued that the combination of such sanctions with what he described as a “naval blockade,” which he called an act of aggression, reduces the sovereignty of other states to something “temporary and conditional” on the will of another power.

“Compliance with such blatant intimidation will not grant any state immunity,” Baghaei said, arguing instead that it would amount to prioritizing foreign sovereignty over the lawful activities of banks, businesses and airports in other countries.

He warned that the ultimate consequence would be the erosion of national sovereignty as a fundamental principle of the UN Charter-based international system and could pave the way for a “disastrous return to outright and full-scale colonialism.”
