Othman Shahin, head of the Masahif Institute affiliated to the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), said that according to statistics collected since 1971, more than 150,000 Turkish citizens have managed to learn the Quran by heart.
Shahin was speaking at a ceremony held Saturday to grant certificates to Quran memorizers in the city of Daran in Malatya province.
Eighteen men and ten women received the Quran memorization certificates at the ceremony.
Shahin said the number of Quran memorizers in Turkey is not good enough yet compared to other Muslim countries, calling for more efforts to promote Quran memorization in the country.
The Holy Quran is the only religious Scripture that is memorized by its followers.
Innumerable persons in every Muslim community have memorized the Quran since the first day it was revealed.
The Quran has 30 Juzes (parts), 114 Surahs (chapters) and 6,236 verses.
