TEHRAN (IQNA) – Rallies marking the International Quds (Jerusalem) Day will be organized in 218 Iranian cities that are in the white zones (coronavirus-free areas).

This was announced in a Saturday meeting of the National Headquarters to Fight the Coronavirus, held via videoconference and chaired by President Hassan Rouhani.

The ceremonies will be held after the Friday prayers not in the form of rallies but as gatherings, the president said.

Eid al-Fitr prayers will also be held in mosques and open spaces across the country while observing the health protocols, he added.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The International Quds Day is a legacy of the late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, who designated the day in solidarity with Palestinians.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, the International Quds Day has been held worldwide on the last Friday of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

This year, the International Quds Day falls on Friday, May 22.

As part of efforts to stem the coronavirus outbreak, rallies will not be held in Iran to mark the Quds Day this year.
