TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Leader of the Islamic Revolution pardoned or reduced the sentences of more than 5,000 Iranian prisoners.

Ayatollah Khamenei Grants Clemency to Prisoners on Imam Reza (AS) Birth Anniversary

The pardon was granted by Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei at the request of the country’s Judiciary Chief Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Ebrahim Raeisi.

It came on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the 8th Shia Imam, and Iran’s Judiciary Week.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery, and embezzlement.

Tuesday, June 22, was the 11th day of the lunar Hijri month of Dhu al-Qa’dah, which marks the birth anniversary of Imam Reza (AS).
