TEHRAN (IQNA) – A poetry night on Ashrua and Muharram was organized by the Iranian Culture House in Lahore, Pakistan.

Iran’s Consul General in Lahore Mohammad Reza Nazeri and head of the Iranian Culture House in the city Jafar Ronas, as well as a number of literary figures and poets attended the cultural event.

It featured poems on Ashura, the event of Karbala and martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS).

The program began with recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by speeches by Ronas and Nazeri.

They underlined the importance of the month of Muharram and the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS).

They said poets and literary figures played a major role in keeping the message of the Master of Martyrs alive throughout history.

The program also commemorated Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Taskhiri, the former president of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought.

The speakers highlighted his role in promoting unity among Muslims and Islamic schools of thought.

Later in the program, which was broadcast by C42 and SUCH TV networks, a number of Pakistani poets read out poems about Imam Hussein (AS) and his uprising.

Every year in Muharram, the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar, Shia Muslims around the world commemorate the martyrdom of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS), and his companions.

Imam Hussein (AS), a grandson of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him), and his 72 companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, in 680 AD after fighting courageously for justice against the much larger army of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.
