TEHRAN (IQNA) – Muslims in India took part in Arbaeen rituals in large numbers over the past ten days.

The Hindu daily Dainik Jagran, one of the most widely circulated Indian newspapers, in a report highlighted the widespread participation of Muslims in the rituals, known in the country as Chihelum (40th day), Shafaqna reported.

It also hailed the participants’ compliance with the health protocols to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In India, Chihelum mourning rituals are held every year from the 10th to 20th day of the lunar Hijri month of Safar, culminating on the day of Arbaeen, it noted.

The newspaper also said the Arbaeen processions in India and elsewhere in the world serve as a reminder of the victory of the truth over falsehood.

Arbaeen marks the 40th day that followed the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam, and his 72-strong companions in the Battle of Karbala, in what is now southern Iraq, in 680 AD.

The battle featured an unjust fight between Imam Hussein (AS) and his army and the hugely outnumbered army of the Umayyad caliph of the time, Yazid I.
