New OIC Sec-Gen Takes Office

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Hissein Ibrahim Taha, the new secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), assumed office on Wednesday.

A representative of Chad, Taha was elected to the position back in November 2020 at the 47th session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers held in Niger. His election came as part of the geographical rotation of the office of the OIC Secretary-General. The African representative will keep the post for five years (up until November 2026), according to the Union of OIC News Agencies website.

He assumed office while attending a ceremony in OIC headquarters in Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah. 

Born in Chad’s Abeche in 1951, Taha received initial education in the African country and in 1972, entered Paris-based INALCO (Institut national des langues et civilisations orientales).

He served as his country’s ambassador to several countries (including France, Spain, and the Vatican) and in 2017 was appointed as the country’s foreign minister. In 2019. Taha became an advisor to the Chadian President.

The diplomat is proficient in French, Arabic, and English.
