People in Qom Bid Farewell to Late Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani

TEHRAN (IQNA) – A large number of people attended a procession in the holy city of Qom on Wednesday to bid farewell to Shia Marja (source of emulation) Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani who died a day earlier.

Representatives of sources of emulation, seminary and university scholars and students and different groups of people attended the procession.

It began at Jahad Square and ended at the holy mausoleum of Hazrat Masoumeh (SA), where the body of the late cleric was circled around the shrine and funeral prayers were said.  

The body will be transported to the holy city of Karbala to be laid to rest near the holy shrine of Imam Hussain (AS).

Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani passed away early on Tuesday at the age of 103.

The Islamic scholar was born in Isfahan’s Golpaygan in 1919 to a religious family. His father, Ayatollah Molla Mohammad Javad Safi, was an expert and teacher of Islamic sciences while also a poet and calligrapher.

Ayatollah Golpaygani studied Islamic sciences in his hometown before moving to Qom and Najaf to attend classes of senior Marjas such as Mohammad Taqi Khansari, Mohammad Kazem Shirazi, and Hossein Ali Tababataei Borujerdi.

The contemporary thinker was also a supporter of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. He was a member of the Assembly of Experts in 1979. Imam Khomeini (RA) appointed him as a jurist in the Guardian Council one year later and he headed the council for eight years.
