In a message of Tuesday, Hakim described Ayatollah Safi’s demise as a great loss for Muslims, especially the followers of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

He described Ayatollah Safi as a pillar of knowledge, guidance and Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and a figure who spent his life in teaching Islam, raising a generation of pragmatic scholars and enhancing the principles of the school of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

He expressed condolences to Imam Zaman (may God hasten his glad advent), the Islamic Ummah, Muslim scholars and family and student of the great source of emulation.

Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani passed away early on Tuesday at the age of 103.

The senior Marja died in a hospital in Qom, according to a statement carried by his office.

It also noted that further information about the time and place of the funeral will be later announced.

The Islamic scholar was born in Isfahan’s Golpaygan in 1919 to a religious family. His father, Ayatollah Molla Mohammad Javad Safi, was an expert and teacher of Islamic sciences while also a poet and calligrapher.

Ayatollah Golpaygani studied Islamic sciences in his hometown before moving to Qom and Najaf to attend classes of senior Marjas such as Mohammad Taqi Khansari, Mohammad Kazem Shirazi, and Hossein Ali Tababataei Borujerdi.

The contemporary thinker was also a supporter of the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran. He was a member of the Assembly of Experts in 1979. Imam Khomeini (RA) appointed him as a jurist in the Guardian Council one year later and he headed the council for eight years.
