TEHRAN (IQNA) – A Palestinian mufti has criticized the distribution of books that use mind maps to facilitate Quran memorization for kids.

Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein

Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem al-Quds and the Palestinian Territories, said that such the book which is provided for the 30th Juze of the Quran is not against Sharia, according to Maan News.

According to a fatwa issued by the mufti, the mind maps used in memorizing the Quran are of various types; some of them are limited to presenting ideas and the meanings of verses, and some of them use symbols and images for the contents of verses or for words mentioned in them, with an attempt to link them to each other.

There is nothing wrong with objectively dividing the verses and their concepts, as it is a kind of interpretation of them, he said, adding that however, the other method, which relies on symbols and images, entails several caveats, including preoccupying the reader to reflect on something other than the meaning of the verses, reducing the meaning of the verse in the symbol assigned to it, fearing that this would lead to the printing of the Quran with these symbols, distracting the reader from the linguistic and rhetorical miracles in the verses of the Noble Quran, and expressing meanings of the verses with pictures or images far from their true meaning or anticipating mistakes and errors.

It is not permissible to refer to the verses of the Noble Quran with symbols and images, except with the approval of accredited scientific and legal authorities, according to the fatwa.

Hence, it continued, the distributed book has many flaws and that authorities should use other means for memorization, especially those derived from sources of interpretation and reliable references.
