TEHRAN (IQNA) – Dozens of Palestinians performed Friday prayers yesterday in the streets of Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem al-Quds despite the deployment of Zionist forces.

Friday Prayers in Sheikh Jarrah

The worshipers strongly condemned the Zionist regime’s plans to demolish Palestinians’ homes in Sheikh Jarrah, Anadolu Agency reported.

The prayers were held near a Palestinian family that has been threatened to be displaced by the regime.

A large number of Israeli police forces were deployed in the neighborhood and while worshippers were performing the prayer, a group of Zionists entered Sheikh Jarrah with the Israeli flag in their hands.

The prayer was led by the Imam of Al Aqsa Mosque and Head of the High Islamic Commission in Jerusalem Sheikh Ekrima Sabri.

Giving a sermon, Sheikh Sabri stressed that evicting residents from their homes is one of the "most horrific forms of injustice”.

He praised the steadfastness of people in defending their homes and lands.

"Oh, sons of Sheikh Jarrah, you are part of al-Quds, and al-Quds is part of you,” he said, noting that preserving this neighborhood is a responsibility for all as God has sanctified this land and it belongs to all Muslims.

Tensions heightened across the Palestinian territories on Sunday, when Israeli forces and illegal settlers renewed their attacks against Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah. The neighborhood has been the scene of frequent crackdowns by Israeli regime forces on the Palestinians protesting against the threatened expulsion of dozens of families from their homes in favor of Israeli settler groups.

The initial tensions that erupted in Sheikh Jarrah last year in part sparked a May 2021 war between the Israeli regime and resistance groups in the Gaza Strip.
