TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian official said pilgrims still cannot travel to Iraq’s holy sites via land borders.

Seyed Majid Mirahamadi

Seyed Majid Mirahamadi, the security and social deputy of the Interior Ministry, said some people willing to make pilgrimage to the holy city of Karbala have in recent days gone to the borders to enter Iraq via land.

He said no pilgrimage trip via land borders is allowed to Iraq, adding that if and when such trips are possible, people will be informed immediately.

Currently, Iranians can visit the holy cities in Iraq, including Najaf and Karbala, via air.

Every year, millions of Iranians travel to Iraq to visit the holy Shia in the Arab country.

However, there have been some restrictions on foreign pilgrims’ trips to Iraq since early 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
