TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Leader of the Islamic Revolution granted clemency to more than 2,200 Iranian prisoners on the auspicious occasions of Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on Sunday approved a proposal from Iran’s Judiciary Chief to pardon or commute the prison terms of 2,272 convicts found guilty by various courts in Iran.

Iran’s Judiciary Chief Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei had sent a letter to the Leader, proposing a list of convicts deserving clemency.

Eid al-Adha, which was celebrated on July 10, is one of the most important Islamic festivals held after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Also known as the sacrifice feast, it is celebrated to honor the dedication and willingness of Prophet Abraham (AS) to sacrifice his son as an act of submission on God’s command.

Eid al-Ghadir comes eight days after Eid al-Adha and marks the day when Prophet Mohammad (AS), on God’s order, appointed Ali ibn Abi Talib, the first Shia Imam, as his successor and the leader of Muslims some 14 centuries ago.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to certain types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in the armed smuggling of narcotics, arms trafficking, kidnapping, acid attacks, rape, armed robbery, bribery, embezzlement, counterfeit money forgery, money laundering, disruption of economy, smuggling of alcoholic drinks, and organized smuggling of commodities.
