Moroccan lawmaker Omar Ahjira

Omar Ahjira, in a letter to Awqaf Minister Ahmed Toufiq, underlined the role that Maktabs can play in teaching Quran and promoting its memorization among the new generation, Sitinfo website reported.

He noted that Moroccan families are keen to send their children to religious scholars and experts to learn the fundamentals of the religion and the Quran.

Maktabs have always played a part in teaching the Quran to generations of people and it is recommended that their activities should resume, he stated.

The lawmaker added that mosques in cities across the country should dedicate a place for teaching Islam and the Quran.

Last month, Tunisia’s Minister of Religious Affairs Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Shaibi had also called for establishment of Quran memorization Maktabs in the country.

He said that such a move would especially benefit children living in remote areas where there are no kindergartens or educational centers.
