TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations called for the arrest of vandals who targeted the homes of two Muslims in Florida.

The Florida chapter of the council (CAIR-FL) called on Lee County Sheriff (LCSO) Carmine Marceno and his department to apprehend and charge the individuals who allegedly vandalized the homes of two Muslim families in San Carlos Park last week.

CAIR-FL also commended LCSO’s swift response in securing both families’ safety while conducting the investigation. One of the vandalized homes is that of a community imam (Islamic religious leader) and interfaith leader Muhammad Al Darsani. The other impacted Muslim family are Palestinian immigrants who recently moved to the neighborhood.

NBC News 2 reported that in recent weeks, individuals who appeared to be a group of teens engaged in hate crimes incidents that started with mocking Hassan’s wife clothing. Last Thursday – December 15th – one of the suspected vandals allegedly attempted to kick the house entrance door open while Hassan’s wife and children were inside by themselves.  Not far away, across the street, Imam Al Darsani’s house was also vandalized on the same day.

In a statement, CAIR-Florida Executive Director Imam Abdullah Jaber said:

“It is worrisome that the alleged aggressions against these two Muslim families escalated to a more dangerous situation. Muslims families should never experience having their house windows broken, cars vandalized and homes broken into, especially just because of who they are.

“Their safety and security, like all other Lee County residents, are the continuous responsibility of LCSO. We commend the prompt reaction and constant communication with the victims by law enforcement authorities, and we hope that their work will lead to justice and a safer neighborhood for the families.”

CAIR-Florida is the state’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
