Iran’s 39th Int’l Quran Contest Opens in Tehran

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 39th edition of Iran’s International Holy Quran Competition was officially inaugurated on Saturday in Tehran.

The opening ceremony was held this afternoon concurrent with Eid al-Maba’ath (marking the appointment of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as the last messenger of God).

The ceremony was held at the Tehran Summit Hall with high-ranking Iranian officials in attendance as thee officials addressed the event.

Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Mehdi Khamoushi, head of the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization, provided details about the event, noting that this is the first edition which includes category of Tarteel for women.

He said that a total of 52 participants from 33 countries will vie in the final of the event in Tehran in the coming days.

The ceremony went on with another speech by Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili before a Tawasheeh and an Ibtihal were performed for the audience by Iranian groups.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf was the final official who addressed the event.

He noted that understanding the concepts in the Holy Quran and implementing them can lead nations to attain prosperity, knowledge, and progress.

“Today, unity and solidarity between Muslims is more important than any other thing,” the top lawmaker said, adding that the Israeli regime is in constant efforts to saw discord among Muslim nations in the West Asian region.

The competition’s closing ceremony is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, February 22, with Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi in attendance.

The competition’s categories include memorization, recitation and tarteel for men and memorization and tarteel for women.

A total of 149 Quran reciters and memorizers from 80 countries, including 114 men and 35 women, took part in the first round.

The motto of this edition, like the previous one, is “One Book, One Ummah”, a testimony to the significance that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches to unity and fraternity among Muslim nations.

Iran’s Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization annually organizes the international Quran contest with the participation of Quran activists from various countries.

The competitions of men’s categories will be staged on February 19-21 from 3:30 to 9:00 PM, local time.

The women’s categories will also be held on February 19-20 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, local time.
