TEHRAN (IQNA) – Fatehpuri Masjid, a 300-year-old mosque situated in the bustling Chandni Chowk area of Delhi, is undergoing major restoration and conservation work.

The Delhi Waqf Board has initiated this project to preserve and protect the ancient mosques in the national capital.

This is a significant endeavour, as the mosque has not received any major repair work in over 50 years. The masjid was built in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of Shah Jahan’s wives. The masjid has become an important historical and cultural landmark over time.

One of the main challenges faced during the restoration work is dampness in the walls and ceiling, which has caused cracks in the plaster. Moreover, some of the stones have deteriorated over time and will need to be smoothed and levelled.

The restoration work aims not only to fix the damage but also to ensure that the mosque can endure for many more years to come.

The ongoing conservation work at Fatehpuri Masjid is part of a larger initiative by the Delhi Waqf Board to preserve and restore several ancient mosques in the city.
