MECCA (IQNA) – In a shift in the administrative landscape of Islam's most revered sites, the Saudi government has unveiled the formation of a new council to oversee the affairs the two revered mosques.

Prophet's Mosque in Medina

This council will directly answer to the monarchy and is tasked with overseeing and managing the multifaceted affairs of the two holiest mosques in Islam, situated in the cities of Mecca and Medina. Saudi state media on Tuesday termed the development as the Kingdom's continued commitment to upholding the sanctity and significance of these sacred sites.

The creation of this new governing body signifies a departure from the prior structure, which had placed the administration of the holy mosques under the government's jurisdiction. Now, the reins of authority have shifted decisively to the king.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA), detailed the mission of this recently established entity, describing it as being entrusted with the task of "presiding over the religious affairs of the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina."

The new council will be responsible for organizing and regulating the religious activities in both mosques, such as lessons, sermons, recitations, and calls to prayer.

The decision is expected to lead to heightened financial and administrative independence for the council.

The Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina are the most sacred places for Muslims around the world, as they are the destinations of pilgrimage and prayer. Millions of Muslims visit these mosques every year to perform Hajj and Umrah rituals, as well as to seek blessings and guidance from God.
