The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the United States’ largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, on Monday hailed the move.

Shahana Hanif, the first Bangladeshi and Muslim woman elected to the City Council, will oversee the six-member panel with fellow co-chair Eric Dinowitz.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:

“We congratulate Councilwoman Shahana Hanif for being the first Muslim Bangladeshi woman to co-chair the City Council’s Task Force to Combat Hate. As a Muslim woman of color, she is in a unique position to combat the hateful experiences of many marginalized communities.”
